Active Membership

Become an Active Member if you are involved in the land administration field as an employee or independent contractor. This membership category is open to anyone with an interest in land administration.

$199.00 / annually

Student Membership

Join LEMAC as a Student Member if you are enrolled in land administration-related courses at a post-secondary institution, working part-time, or not yet working in an energy-industry land position. Proof of enrollment at a post-secondary institution is required.

$75 / annually

Retired Membership

If you were employed in the petroleum industry in roles associated with land administration for a minimum of five years and are now retired and not currently active in the land administration field as an employee or independent contractor, you are welcome to join LEMAC as a Retired Member.

$75 / annually

Career Transition Membership

This membership is for individuals who are in a career transition at the time of their renewal and may apply for reduced membership dues. Members who become unemployed after their due’s renewal period or have already paid their invoices will not be issued a partial refund. Members approved for reduced dues, retain full membership with access to benefits and services. The Career Transition membership category will be available for one year only. Proof of unemployment (Service Canada or Record of Employment) is required.

    BRENDA ALLBRIGHT

    Department of Energy, Tenure

    Brenda Allbright has had a close relationship with CAPLA from its inception and enjoys all the interactions she has with the members over the years. Brenda graduated from the University of Alberta with a BSc in Microbiology, has a Master’s Certificate in Project Management and reads copious management books. She started working with the Government of Alberta in 1979 and has worked for the departments of Health, Sustainable Resource Development and since 1988 with Energy. She has experience in all areas of Tenure, in progressively responsible positions, and is currently the Executive Director of P&NG Tenure with the Department of Energy.

     

    PAUL BATKE

    Paul Batke graduated from the University of Alberta with a BSc and a BEd. In 1972, he began his career with the Government of Alberta in the Department of Mines and Minerals (now the Department of Energy). In 2010 he completed thirty-eight years with Energy in progressively-responsible positions ending with the position of Director of Tenure Regulatory Issues. During the latter part of his career and starting with the formation of CAPLA, he had significant interactions with CAPLA members on various teams and the Tenure Industry Advisory Committee. The teams were able to standardize process initiatives such as E-Tenure and deliver a streamlined legislative and regulatory tenure framework.

    LINDA BERNIER

    Linda Bernier retired as Team Lead Mineral Land Asset Management at Encana in 2011 and now works as an independent consultant. She began her career in land in 1977 and obtained a Petroleum Sciences Certificate from Mount Royal College in 1990. Linda was a member of CAPLA’s Founding Board of Directors and served two terms as CAPLA’s Communications Director during which she and her committee launched the NEXUS newsletter and the association’s annual report. In addition to serving on the Advisory Council, she is also a member of the CAPLA Leadership Forum and the CAPLA Awards Committee. Other volunteer work has included serving on the Founding Board of Directors for the Centre for Energy Asset Management Studies (CEAMS) and various CAPL volunteer positions.

    JONATHAN CHAPMAN

    Legacy Land and Title Company Inc.

    Jonathan Chapman is President of Legacy Land and Title Company Inc., a private firm providing land expertise in negotiations, title administration, due diligence, arbitration, litigation support, land information systems assessment and acquisition/divestment services. A founding Director of CAPLA, Jonathan served as Vice-President from CAPLA’s inception in 1993 through 1997. He has served as member and chair of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers Mineral Rights Committee, member of the ERCB Orphan Well Peer Review Committee and also served as an advisor to the Mount Royal University Petroleum Land Certificate Program. Jonathan’s professional involvements have included membership in the American Association of Petroleum Landmen, the Canadian Association of Petroleum Landmen, the Petroleum Join Venture Association as well as CAPLA.

    Lynn Gregory

    Velvet Energy Ltd.

    Lynn Gregory began her career in Land in 1979 at Home Oil Company Limited.  Under the tutelage of her initial Supervisor, she gained experience in mineral and surface administration and when he retired in 1982, she assumed his position and continued developing her technical skills in contracts, drafting, systems development, together with personnel staff management, training and mentoring skills.  Through the acquisition of Home Oil by Anderson Exploration and then by Devon Canada, she continued to advance her career.  After leaving Devon, she gained more exposure to both small and large companies, in various consulting roles and permanent positions, and is currently Manager, Contracts and Land Administration at Velvet Energy Ltd.  Member of both CAPLA since inception and CAPL since 1991, earning her P.Land designation in 1993. A CAPLA Board Member twice, co-chair of the Segregation Committee, Awards Committee and Tenure Industry Advisory Council (TIAC) member since inception.  Participating in numerous CAPL Procedure updates (Operating, FORP, PTP) has provided her with the opportunity for both technical learnings and to develop personal contacts.

     

    CRAIG JOHNSTONE

    Enerplus Corporation

    Craig Johnstone is an oil and gas lawyer who has been practicing for over 25 years and is currently in-house legal counsel at Enerplus Corporation. He began his career at Bennett Jones and after four years, joined Blain & Company (which became Thackray Burgess) where he worked for 15 years. He has extensive experience with oil and gas acquisitions and divestitures, title reviews and opinions, and issues arising out of industry agreements such as the CAPL Operating Procedure. He incorporated CAPLA as a society and has been pro bono counsel for CAPLA since its inception. He was been a sessional instructor at SAIT, teaching oil and gas law for 13 years, and has spoken on many topics at CAPLA conferences.

    KEVIN MACFARLANE

    KS MacFarlane Services Inc.

    Kevin MacFarlane grew up in Calgary, received his Commerce Degree from U of C and his Law Degree from the University of Toronto. After working in private practice in the area of oil and gas for about five years, Kevin worked in Suncor’s Law Department for five years and Petro-Canada’s Law Department for three years. In 1991, Kevin became manager of Petro-Canada’s Western Canada Land Department and retired as Manager of Land Services and Contracts in 2009. Kevin has taught oil and gas law courses at Mount Royal University, at the University of Calgary and for the Canadian Association of Petroleum Landmen over the first 12 years of his career, commencing in 1980. In 1999, Kevin became engaged once again in supporting the continuing education of the broader community of experienced land professionals as Chair of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Land Administration’s Certification Committee, a position which he held until 2009. During 2007, Kevin assumed the role of Vice-Chair of the Centre for Energy Asset Management Studies, an initiative which he saw as an opportunity to support the development of a full time post-secondary program and thereby provide an exciting new career horizon for future high school graduates. Kevin’s role on the Board of the Centre for Energy Asset Management Studies extended from its formation in 2005 until 2009.

    JIM MACLEAN

    Repsol Oil & Gas Canada Inc.

    Jim MacLean is Manager of Mineral Land Asset Management at Repsol Oil & Gas Canada Inc.. Prior to this, he had a consulting practice that specialized in training and mentoring, problem resolution and assisting clients with complex agreements, and he also worked in diverse assignments with Chevron Canada Resources for many years. He has worked directly on a number of industry standardization and work process improvement initiatives, including the industry dispute resolution processes and the Industry Advisory Committee working with the Alberta Department of Energy on the Alberta Land Tenure Review Project. He has also been the principal draftsman of a number of industry documents. These include the 1990 CAPL Operating Procedure, the 1997 CAPL Farmout & Royalty Procedure, the 2000 CAPL Property Transfer Procedure and the 2007 CAPL Operating Procedure. He is an instructor of courses on the Operating Procedure, Acquisitions and Divestitures and the Farmout & Royalty Procedure, and is a regular speaker at oil and gas industry meetings and conferences.

    Government Membership

    Individuals who are employed by government agencies or other non-commercial organizations related to land asset management may join LEMAC. Government members may not hold office or vote at LEMAC meetings. They are not required to pay annual membership dues. For more information, send an email to office@landenergy.ca

    Membership in LEMAC is held by individuals. Although your employer may have paid your annual membership fee, your membership is valid for you personally until it expires. LEMAC does not provide membership fee refunds to individuals or companies.

      GARY MONTGOMERY

      Tri Mont Resources

      Gary Montgomery began his career in land at Shell Canada in the Title and Rental Section in 1971. It was there he got his preliminary training in administration, surface and mineral negotiating. Gary subsequently held land management positions with small, medium and major E&P companies and has worked both in Canada and the USA. In the early 90’s he helped develop and instruct CAPL’s original course on Asset Acquisitions and Divestitures. Prior to forming his current company, Gary consulted for Gulf Canada from 1987 to 1995 when he became Director of Land and subsequently Land Manager of Gulf/ConocoPhillips until December 2006. Gary is a Past President and Life Member of the CAPL and a Past Director and Vice-President of the AAPL. He is a strong advocate of professionalism in our industry and was very involved in the implementation of CAPL’s Professionalism program. Today, Gary is President of Tri Mont Resources Ltd., a consulting company which provides land and business related services to industry clients.

       

      VERNA MOODIE

      Verna Moodie has been employed in the oil and gas industry since 1964, holding positions in information systems and land administration. She was Leader, Mineral Land Services at Petro-Canada Oil and Gas until retiring in November 2009 after 30 years of service. Verna was honored to serve as CAPLA’s President from 1998 – 2002, as well as other committee positions since the inception of CAPLA. Verna has an extensive background in the design, development and implementation of land systems and was Co-Chair of the Land Model Workgroup for the Professional Petroleum Data Management Association (PPDM) from 1997 – 2002. Honours and awards include the Premier’s Award of Excellence (1999 – Silver, Mineral Rental Statement Project; 2000 – Bronze, P&NG Tenure Review Project; 2007 – Gold, e-Tenure Project) and CAPLA Honourary Lifetime Member.

      GALE C. ROBINS

      Gale Robins was CAPLA’s Founding President and a recipient of our lifetime membership award.  She is currently the Executive Director at Baiona Inc. and has over 30 years of management and consulting experience in the oil and gas industry both in the private and public sectors. She has taught royalty and energy asset management courses to over 1,000 attendees.

      RON VERMEULEN

      Ron Vermeulen P.Land, is the Founder and Past President at LandSolutions LP, a land acquisition, administration, environmental and public involvement firm. Ron is a graduate of Olds College from 1985 and has worked his way up through land via Bow Valley, Amoco Canada and Gulf Canada Resources in team lead and manager positions in Surface land as well as Joint Interest Administration before starting LandSolutions in 2000. Ron has served as a Director on the CAPLA Board of Directors as well as CAPL. He has held past positions with various committees in CAPLA and CAPL and is a recipient of CAPL’s Herb Hughes Memorial Award and is also a Life member of CAPL. Although Ron is mostly retired he continues to play a role with LandSolutions as an active Board Member and continues with his charitable work as well as a position on the Board for the Tanzanian Children’s Fund of Canada.
